Michelle Kavouras, based in Sitka, Alaska, is a Nationally Certified Peer Specialist. With over eight years of recognized expertise, Michelle is renowned for her advocacy as a peer doula in Chicago, championing the rights of parents and pregnant individuals contending with healthcare issues due to their current or past history of substance use. She also leads efforts to educate healthcare professionals on combating stigma within the healthcare system.
Recently, Michelle shared her personal journey of facing discrimination within the healthcare system, alongside strategies to enhance care practices for parents who use substances. Her contributions have been highlighted in notable publications, including pieces on peer recovery doulas and addressing the stigma surrounding pregnant people with opioid use disorder. Additionally, Michelle has shared her insights on various podcasts, delving into topics such as peer support services for pregnant and postpartum patients. With her extensive experience and dedication to harm reduction, Michelle continues to raise awareness of the barriers and lack of appropriate care offered to people who use.
