We must demand more than promises

This week, I had the honor of co-authoring a new op-ed in STAT with Teresa Cobleigh, a courageous mother who lost both of her sons — Spencer and Graham — to preventable overdoses. Our journeys are different: mine shaped by the hope of recovery, Teresa’s by the devastation of unimaginable loss. But we’ve both come to the same painful conclusion:

The system is broken. And people are dying because of it.

We wrote this piece because the overdose crisis can’t be solved with good intentions alone. We need enforceable, national standards for addiction treatment. We need to hold treatment centers, insurers, pharmaceutical companies — and everyone who profits from this crisis — accountable when they put people at risk.

This isn’t just about bad actors. It’s about the lack of any meaningful accountability at all.

This epidemic has already taken more than one million lives. We can’t bring them back. But we can prevent the next million — if we act.

Please take a few minutes to read the article. Share it. Talk about it. Demand more from the people and systems meant to help us heal.

For Spencer. For Graham. For everyone still fighting.

In solidarity,
